BEST DESIGN EVENTS: From May 23rd to 28th, Oporto (Portugal) will be in the spotlight of all professional designer and design lover across the Globe. That’s because the city has selected as the European Capital of Design, hosting a series of actions incorporated in the European Design Awards program. The European Design Awards 2017 starts on this Tuesday, with the opening of an exhibition of the Two Pages project, and The Most Expensive Homes presents all information that you need about the worldwide renowned awards ceremony that distinguishes the best examples of communication design in Europe.
For this year, the ED Awards program starts with the opening of the Two Pages Project on the Silo Auto’s 7th floor (get the directions here). The exhibition will feature a selection of 112 spreads spanning different approaches ranging from drawing/sketching, illustration, photography and design.
Launched in 2012 by designers Konstantinos Trichas and Dionysis Livanis, the Two Pages project has already contributed more than 450 artists from around the world, including an active core based in Oporto. Open to new talents, this collaborative project is based on the creation of sketchbooks with the most diverse trends in the field of visual communication.
Alongside the exhibition, which will be shown at Silo Auto until Sunday, May 28, Konstantinos Trichas (designer) and Dionysis Livanis (plastic and designer artists) promote a workshop on visual language and urban culture in Oporto on Thursday, Thursday, May 25, between 12 and 16 hours. Although free of charge, participation in the workshop requires online registration.
On Saturday, May 27, at the Rivoli Theater, the main conference will take place at 2:30 p.m., followed by the awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m., also in the theater’s main auditorium.
From 11 pm onwards, there will be a party on the rooftop floor of the Post Office Building, along with the pre-opening of the exhibition “Design by Porto, Porto by Design: 4 Years of Design of the Porto City Hall“, which emphasizes the graph identity of the city, winner in two categories of the ED Awards 2015 edition.
Also on Thursday, May 25, starting at 2:00 p.m., the 3rd floor of the Post Office Palace, next to the Oporto City Hall, hosts another workshop, promoted by the collective Post Eady named as “A Tumblr Manifesto: The Critical Intentions of the Interface Deco “. The main goal of this workshop is to provide different perspectives about Graphic Design as a discipline. Participation in the workshop is also free but requires mandatory registration through this link.
On Friday, May 26, a program parallel to the ED Awards will continue in the afternoon, inviting the participants to get to know the creative environment of the city through three guided visits to design studios based in the Oporto downtown and Matosinhos.
The studios invited to integrate into these tours will present their work, discuss their challenges, their solutions, and their methodology, by interacting and sharing opinions and experiences with the participants (20 for each tour). Registration has a cost of nine euros.
In its debut in Oporto, the festival will offer special conditions to the students, who will be able to watch the entire program planned for the Rivoli Theater — the main conference and award ceremony — with a special discount: the ticket has a symbolic price of €5,00 and can be purchased until the day of the festival at the theater ticket offices.
This ticket also gives free access to the party that will take place at Saturday night, on the 7th floor of the Post Office. Tickets are also available online.
In the year in which it is celebrating its 10th edition, the European Design Awards ceremony will be held for the first time in Oporto, under the theme “Celebrating Creative Excellence“, after having already passed through cities such as Vienna, Istanbul, Cologne, Helsinki, Rotterdam, Stockholm, Zurich or Athens.
The event will distinguish the best examples of communication design in Europe in more than 30 different categories. In addition to the ceremony, which will bring to Oporto the most renowned designers, studios and agencies from all over Europe, the city will also be a venue for conferences, exhibitions, workshops and guided visits to design studios that will help to better understand and debate the purpose of the Design in our daily life.
