Yves Saint Laurent Luxurious Home Is Now A Hotel

Yves Saint Laurent Luxurious Home Is Now A Hotel – Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Yves Saint Laurent’s deep appreciation for Moroccan culture and design as his beloved Tangier vacation home is transformed into a luxurious boutique hotel. From their inaugural trip to Marrakech in 1966, Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé’s hearts were captured by the city’s vivid hues and cultural treasures, sparking a lifelong love affair with Morocco. This passion led them to acquire two magnificent properties, one in Marrakech and another atop a picturesque hill in Tangier, offering breathtaking vistas of the enchanting Strait of Gibraltar. Presently, the captivating Tangier clifftop hideaway that served as the muse for Saint Laurent’s legendary collections opens its majestic crenelated horseshoe-arched doors to welcome guests. Painstakingly renovated by renowned British designer Jasper Conran, the 1940s villa has undergone a magnificent transformation into an exquisite 12-suite hotel, boasting panoramic terraces that offer breathtaking views of lush gardens and the glistening Tangier sea. Conran devoted four years to the meticulous restoration, preserving the essence of Saint Laurent’s aesthetic choices, and honoring the property’s rich history and allure.

Initially known as Villa Mabrouka, a name signifying “House of Luck” in Arabic, the residence was masterfully envisioned by acclaimed decorator Jacques Grange, following Saint Laurent’s creative vision. Grange’s interiors beautifully captured the concept of an unconventional Englishman dwelling in Tangier, adorned with chintz fabrics and distinct color palettes for each room.

Throughout the restoration process, Conran meticulously preserved the essence of 1940s modernist architecture while seamlessly blending traditional Moroccan design elements and the inviting ambiance of English country house interiors.

Each of the 12 suites provides an enchanting and immersive journey, with a distinct color theme adorning each room. Glazed linens in a captivating array of chutney, caramel, emerald, and rose hues adorn the interiors, beautifully complemented by skillfully handcrafted bejmat and zellige glazed clay tiles, hailing from local artisans.

The ambiance is further enriched with a touch of history and artistry through the inclusion of ancient Roman mosaics and 16th-century Andalusian tiles, creating a truly authentic and captivating experience.

The Marrakech Suite, originally the master bedroom of Saint Laurent, now extends a warm invitation to guests with its glazed seating area and functional fireplace. Conran thoughtfully preserved the exquisite Murano chandeliers, beamed ceilings, and monochromatic marble floors, infusing the hotel with an atmosphere of intimate comfort and timeless elegance.

Conran’s aspiration for Villa Mabrouka is to curate an intimate experience that evokes the feeling of staying in a beloved home rather than a typical hotel. Every detail reflects Conran’s personal admiration for the beauty and fine craftsmanship, providing guests with an opportunity to immerse themselves in the enchanting ambiance of the surroundings.

Outside the confines of the hotel, Conran has initiated a revitalizing project that includes replanting and preserving the grounds, introducing an impressive array of 6,500 new plants, shrubs, and trees to enhance the already abundant landscape. Nestled into the clifftop, a tranquil pool graces the scene, complemented by a smaller plunge pool adorned with exquisite locally-crafted emerald herringbone tiles.
