Masala Zone Piccadilly Circus: A Grand Indian Brasserie in a Historic London Setting

The newly unveiled Masala Zone Piccadilly Circus is a striking addition to London’s dining scene, masterfully blending the vibrant essence of Indian culture with the historic charm of the Criterion Building. This Grade II listed landmark, known for its breathtaking gold mosaic ceilings and marble walls, has been transformed into an opulent Indian brasserie, thanks to the creative vision of renowned interior designer Jeffrey Wilkes, in collaboration with Masala Zone’s founders, Ranjit Mathrani, Namita Panjabi, and Camellia Panjabi.

Jeffrey Wilkes, celebrated for his work with prestigious hotels like the Mandarin Oriental and Oberoi, has reimagined the expansive 3,200 square-foot ground floor space while honoring its architectural heritage

ambience

The design seamlessly marries the building’s original grandeur with a contemporary Indian aesthetic, creating a dynamic yet intimate atmosphere.

Wilkes faced the challenge of preserving the historic ceiling and walls, which meant ingeniously suspending light fixtures and art installations to achieve a harmonious design without altering the listed structure.

Warm Hospitality

ambience

The interiors burst with rich color and texture, heavily inspired by Camellia Panjabi’s Indian kaftans. The space features marble arches inlaid with vibrant shades of turquoise, malachite, and rose, complementing the iconic ceiling. Custom elements, like Mughal-inspired floral carpets and a luminous pink bar reminiscent of a monumental crystal, lend the venue a sense of luxury.

ambience

Jali screens intricately divide the restaurant, allowing glimpses across the space, much like a Maharaja observing his guests. The blend of crisp oak, multi-hued tweed banquettes, and timber tabletops evokes a unique fusion of a London club and a lively Rajasthan market.

Authentic Indian Flavors

ambience

Throughout the restaurant, years of travel and curation by Wilkes and the Panjabi sisters come to life in meaningful artifacts and art pieces. Antique brass tiffins, soda bottles, and playful collections adorn the space, while a playful highlight is the pair of large elephants elevated on brass posts, bringing whimsy and breaking down the room’s formality. A magnificent three-meter painting by Udaipur artist Shahid Parvez anchors the end wall, depicting a joyful Maharaja and Maharani reveling in the grand setting.

ambience

Masala Zone Piccadilly Circus is a testament to this dedication, offering a sophisticated yet warm space that celebrates the vibrancy of India within one of London’s most iconic architectural gems.
