South San Francisco’s unique topography is a key feature and alluring element for this new AC Hotel. DLR Group’s design embodies an unparalleled departure from the everyday hotel experience while still being specific to the AC brand – defined by a high-style environment and European sophistication. The exterior of the hotel resembles the brilliance of an oyster shell with a large open courtyard allowing natural light to flow. Looking to create a delightful escape from the mundane, the design brings the peaceful coast environment indoors, employing elements of the bay such as colors and textures associated with pearls, calm shells, and the ocean.
DLR Group’s design for the interiors of the hotel draws heavy inspiration from Scandinavian home-works. Abstractions of quilting and weaving are present throughout the hotel’s artwork and in its fixtures and furnishings. Intentional about creating a design that is rooted in the building’s history without feeling overtly industrial, the interior of the hotel exhibits delicate and subtle touchpoints. Elements are custom-designed throughout to recall turn-of-the-century Scandinavian imagery. Designers created a hand-crafted residential feel through the use of patchwork patterns repeated in the lobby’s sofas, guest room beds, and in the bar and café’s tilework. The interior aesthetic also celebrates the materiality of the building.

The overall sensual quality is familiar yet elegant and sophisticated. DLR Group’s design uses an abundance of neutral tones in painted moldings, unapologetic filigree, and rich ornamentation on walls, amplified when their shadows further reveal their depth in the daylight.
