1. Shenzhen Women & Children’s Center / MVRDV

The renovation of the Shenzhen Women & Children Center by MVRDV has been successfully finished and is now accessible to the public. Located in Shenzhen’s Futian district, this design encompasses a multi-purpose tower that incorporates a diverse range of public amenities. Through this adaptive reuse project, the structure has been transformed by introducing vibrant colours, lush green elements, and additional public spaces.

The building is also equipped with community-oriented features, including a library, a children’s theater, a “discovery hall” serving as an exhibition space, and a family service hall. In parallel, the tower accommodates office spaces and a hotel. The entire mixed-use tower is dedicated to providing facilities that cater to the well-being of women and children.

2. Jiangxi River Bridge / Zaha Hadid Architects

ZHA’s Jiangxi River Bridge is situated over a tributary of the Tuojiang River within China’s Sichuan province, and it spans an impressive 295 meters. This project marks the initial installment of a collection of bridges along Chengdu’s West Line Road. The Chengdu West First Bridge serves as both a roadway and a bridge for bicycles and pedestrians, extending over the flowing Jiangxi River.

It boasts a central span of 185 meters, with auxiliary spans reaching 55 meters and extending to the riverbanks. This configuration facilitates the completion of the western segment of the Airport New Town ring road and cycling pathway.

3. Orionis Planetarium and Observatory / Snøhetta

Snøhetta has conceived the Orionis planetarium and observatory with the intent of establishing a space that is both accessible and inspirational for visitors. Positioned amid the Scarpe River and the Arkéos archaeological museum, the project strives to integrate these components seamlessly, contributing to an enriched visitor experience.

Drawing inspiration from the idea of perpetual motion, the reception area, exhibition zones, amphitheater, and the architectural domes collectively embody this foundational principle. Snøhetta’s design manifests as a harmonious structure characterized by curved elements that encircle the two domes throughout the entire site.

4. American Museum of Natural History Richard Gilder Center / Studio Gang

In 2017, Studio Gang secured the green light from the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, granting them the authority to kickstart the extension of the American Museum of Natural History. Presently accessible to the public, this expansion encompasses 245,000 square feet distributed across six floors, with a substantial 80% of it remaining within the existing museum’s boundaries.

Notably, the design introduces the Gilder Center, which is designated to accommodate a range of fresh exhibition spaces and educational facilities. Of the total six floors, four are now welcoming the public, facilitating visitors to explore the entire campus via new entrances integrated around the structure.

5. Buffalo AKG Art Museum / OMA/ Shohei Shigematsu

At its core, the Buffalo AKG Art Museum is both a city structure and a tranquil museum in nature. Situated at the northern edge of the historic Delaware Park, the museum itself is comprised of two connected historic buildings.

The expansion project by OMA reconnects the museums to the site, allowing a new openness to public activities to arise. Moreover, through rethinking the program and its bounds, the project allows for new types and modules of public engagement to take place.
