Queen Elizabeth: Inside Balmoral Castle

Balmoral Castle has been in the royal family for many years. Located in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, it was first visited by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1842. The couple eventually bought the country mansion in 1852 after the Queen had fallen in love with it. It was then demolished and a new and larger structure was built on the grounds in 1856.

The estate today has 150 structures and is renowned for its exquisite architecture, expansive grounds, and intriguing royal past. John and William Smith, two Scottish architects, designed the castle in a baronial and Gothic revival style.

Despite being only 50 miles west of Aberdeen, Balmoral Castle has a completely different atmosphere. The 50,000-acre estate is located in the River Dee Valley in the Grampian Mountains’ foothills. The castle is perched on a terrace about 926 feet above sea level, providing spectacular views of the expansive landscape of the estate. It was described by Queen Victoria as a place that could “make one forget the world and its sad turmoils.” At Balmoral Castle “all seemed to breathe freedom and peace“.

Although Balmoral Castle has many rooms, some stand out in particular. The ballroom is one such example. A masterclass in Highlands flair, it features enormous chandeliers, mounted stag heads, and trefoil patterns.

You can get an idea of what the Balmoral rooms looked like during Queen Victoria’s reign  from illustrations from the 1800s. There were numerous patterned wall coverings, carved wood cabinets, fire screens, and framed sceneries. There was also a lot of candelabra, which were useful at the time.

Prince Albert’s study shared the same aesthetic, right down to the checkered carpeting. The usage of lovely white floral materials and a green wallpaper with white blossom flecks in that private space was also excellent. Evidently, Prince Albert thought that the interiors of Balmoral should be adorned with trophies and weaponry, as well as Highland accents like tartans and chintzes.

It is popularly believed that Balmoral Castle was Queen Elizabeth II’s favourite home because it was where she and her family spent their summer vacation every year.

According to Princess Eugenie’s words in the documentary Our Queen At Ninety, the Queen was “the happiest there. I think she really, really loves the Highlands. It’s a lovely base for Granny and Grandpa, for us to come and see them up there, where you just have room to breathe and run.” There were always “walks, picnics, dogs—a lot of dogs, there’s always dogs—and people coming in and out all the time.”

The Queen reputedly preferred spending her summer vacations in Balmoral because it was a quiet retreat where the family could enjoy outdoor activities like horseback riding and barbecuing while remaining hidden from prying eyes.

Many important figures passed through the halls of Balmoral Castle, and many historic events are linked to it. Princess Diana and King Charles III were there during their honeymoon and years later, the news of Princess Diana’s passing reached the Queen while she was at Balmoral. Additionally, it was the location of the isolation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla during the start of the COVID-19 epidemic. Balmoral was also the place where Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II passed away peacefully on the 8th of September of the present year.
