Karl Lagerfeld Maison, the fashion brand’s new interior branch, made its debut during Milan Design Week 2023, with an inaugural collection created in collaboration with interior designer Matteo Nunziati and presented at a new showroom at via Passione 8.
The launch consisted of four collections, each named after Karl Lagerfeld’s favourite areas of Paris: ‘Saint Germain’ and ‘Saint Guillaume’ included living areas and bedroom furniture, ‘Quai Voltaire’ was dedicated to the kitchen, and ‘Rue de l’Université’ was a lighting collection.
The collections drew direct inspiration from Lagerfeld’s interior design approach, characterized by his evident passion for design in every space he created. His interiors were a fusion of classic and historical design with contemporary pieces, reflecting his meticulous research and refinement. According to Caroline Lebar, the brand’s SVP of Image and Communications, who had worked with Lagerfeld for almost four decades, he was not a collector but someone who filled a house and his mind with a style idea. She added that Lagerfeld’s unique talent was his ability to become an expert as soon as he focused on a period or style.

Each collection features the work of a new guest who was invited to interpret Lagerfeld’s design approach. Lagerfeld himself had been advocating for a collaborative approach for the brand, which the team continued to follow for any new development. Each creative immersed themselves in Lagerfeld’s world to start putting together current and future collections. The result was a series of designs that captured the creative director’s DNA.
Matteo Nunziati, responsible for the Saint Germain Collection, drew inspiration from the aesthetics of Paris and Hamburg, two cities close to Lagerfeld. He envisioned the late designer strolling along the canals of the German city or walking by the mansions of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris during the design process.

The collection’s standout piece is the Saint Germain sofa, which is described as the hero piece. The sides and back of the sofa are designed as a small library to display books horizontally, as Lagerfeld preferred to read the titles on the spines. This design feature is repeated throughout the Saint Germain collection, with slots for books incorporated into side tables, coffee tables, a sideboard, and a bedroom wall system.
The color and material palettes were in line with the brand’s visual spirit (and the designer’s preferences), incorporating white and black with subtle pops of red and pink, as well as reflective materials, brushed metals, and glass surfaces. Other pieces from the collections include the Quai Voltaire dining table, which has a metal frame and a lacquered glass top, and its design is a blend of contemporary and Bauhaus styles, and the Saint Germain chair.
