This project is very different from all the others that we are used to. Located in Algarve, Portugal, this house was thought of by science fiction lovers that saw their dream come to life thanks to Bespoke Architects. Sky Base I draws inspiration from Star Wars with a design similar to the famous Millennium Falcon.
Bespoke Architects states that the project was based on the client’s desire to create a villa inspired by the famous saga, and the need to create as much possible living space in a relatively narrow oceanfront location.
“We never know what the client’s vision is going to be when you first meet them. I was impressed when this couple suggested a villa inspired by Star Wars on the Carvoeiro’s cliffs. I invited our senior architect Alexandre Mendes to join the following meeting as part of the team because I knew he would be the right person to make this dream come to life. It was an amazing journey and we are proud of being part of it.” said John Wilson, founder and leading architect of Bespoke Architects in an interview he gave to Idealista.
The project was carefully thought about, with attention to every detail and the architecture itself. Each suite has a premium ocean view, and the center of the house includes an elevator and an amazing circular living room. Skylights are a reference to the technical hatchways.

“The sketch was based on fractal geometry and the golden ratio. We tried to create an object that was heavy and lightweight at the same time as if we didn’t know if it was landing or about to take off to an unknown place. That was possible by using a dark tone for the basement area in order to make the shape of the house stand out. The house was not designed to be contemplated as a distant object.”
According to Alexandre Mendes, what makes this such an amazing project is the clients. “We definitely must start with the clients. Firstly, Vanda and Alex gave us the best basic concepts for us to rethink the way we idealize a home, secondly, they embraced our project, which is the central point of what is happening today. The philosophy that sustains the Star Wars environment has taken us on a journey of self-development, based on traditional Chinese Taoism, helping us to understand nature, its balance, and, essentially, how we are able to create environments that relate as a whole.” the architect says.

In contrast to the private rooms, the social spaces were elevated in order to highlight and enhance the architectural object’s complexity. The house’s relationship to the elevated swimming pool creates a dynamic line that raises the ground, giving the project its distinctive appearance.
